H2SO4 Acid (Sulfuric Acid): Properties, Safety Hazards & Troubleshooting
H2SO4 acid is an essential industrial chemical but has highly corrosive. Article by Loc Thien Compiled to help you understand the characteristics - risks - spill handling measures and first aid in case of contact for safe operation.
1. What is H2SO4 acid?
H2SO4 (sulfuric acid, vitriol) is a strong inorganic acid consisting of sulfur, oxygen, and hydrogen. The scale of H2SO4 production often reflects the level of industrial development. Common production processes: contact, wet acid, lead chamber (history),…

2. Physical properties
Liquid colorless to pale yellow, odorless; infinitely soluble in water, strongly exothermic when diluted (always pour acid into water).
| Properties | Values/Features |
|---|---|
| Hygroscopicity | Very strong; easily absorbs water vapor/SO gas3. |
| pH | <1 (at concentrations commonly used in industry). |
| Conductor | Good due to strong dissociation; high viscosity at high concentrations. |
3. Chemical properties (some typical reactions)
Dilute H2SO4: strongly acidic; reacts with metals before H2 (except passivated metals like Pb), basic oxides, bases and carbonates.
- Fe+H2SO4 → FeSO4 + H2↑
- FeO + H2SO4 → FeSO4 + H2O
- Na2CO3 + H2SO4 → In2SO4 + CO2↑ + H2O
- H2SO4 + 2NaOH → Na2SO4 + 2H2O (ratio 1:2); 1:1 creates NaHSO4.
Concentrated H2SO4: In addition to being acidic, it is also strong oxidizer , and dehydrating agent.
- Cu + 2H2SO4(concentrated) → CuSO4 +SO2↑ + 2H2O
- Road + H2SO4(special) → dehydration, creating black carbon columns and heat.
4. Is H2SO4 acid toxic?
H2SO4 causes severe chemical burns Skin/eye contact; mist causes respiratory irritation. Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal necrosis. Always wear PPE (gloves, goggles, acid-respirator mask) and operate in a well-ventilated area.
5. Handling of H2SO4 spills (practical summary)
- Isolation & Control: cordon off, build dikes; ventilate if safe.
- Absorb: Spread absorbent material (chemical absorbent pillow/pad, inert powder); collect from edge to center.
- Controlled neutralization: Dùng NaHCO3 or Na2CO3 spread wait a minute, avoid rapid reaction causing splashing/high heat; monitor pH of test paper.
- Hazardous waste collection: packaging, labeling; delivery according to environmental regulations.
- Detoxify the area: Rinse with water several times; check for toxic gases if necessary.

6. First aid when exposed to H2SO4 acid
- Eye: Flush with water continuously for ≥15–20 minutes, remove contact lenses if present; seek medical attention immediately.
- From: Flush with water for several minutes; remove contaminated clothing; apply sterile dressing and seek medical attention.
- Inhalation of vapor: Remove to fresh air; provide respiratory support if needed; monitor medically.
- Ingestion: No induce vomiting; urgent transfer to hospital.
