  • Slaked Lime: What Is It, Properties, Applications, Preparation, First Aid Measures

Slaked lime Also known as Ca(OH)2, it is widely used in water treatment, cleaning, construction, and fertilizer production. In this article, we will learn more about what slaked lime is, its physical and chemical properties, its applications, preparation methods, and first aid measures.

1.What is slaked lime?

Slaked lime has the chemical formula Ca(OH)2. Colorless crystals or white powder are obtained when quicklime reacts with water to create slaked lime.

– Lime is used in fields such as water treatment, cleaning, construction, fertilizer production, etc.

2. Physical properties of lime

– Slaked lime exists as a white solid.

– Density is about 2.21 g/cm³

– Lime dissolves in water, forming an alkaline solution

– Calcium hydroxide solution has the ability to dissolve carbon dioxide from the air, contributing to the CO2 sinking process.

3. Chemical properties of slaked lime

+ Reaction with acid: Slaked lime reacts with acids to form calcium salts.

Ca(OH)2 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + 2H2O

+ Reaction with CO₂: Calcium hydroxide absorbs carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air to form calcium carbonate. This makes calcium hydroxide less soluble in water.

Ca (OH) 2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O

+ Reaction with water: Calcium hydroxide can react with water to produce an alkaline solution:

Ca(OH)2→Ca2+ 2OH-

+ Reaction with ammonium: Calcium hydroxide can react with ammonium to form calcium salt and water:

Ca(OH)2 + 2NH3 → Ca(NH2)2 + 2H2O

4. Application of slaked lime in water treatment today

-  Water softener: Lime interacts with calcium and magnesium ions in water, helping to reduce water hardness by forming calcium carbonate precipitates, preventing the buildup of mineral deposits.

Adjust pH: Calcium hydroxide has the ability to alkalize water, helping to adjust the pH. Maintaining a stable pH is important to ensure the performance of other water treatment processes.

Wastewater treatment: Used to neutralize acid and alkalize wastewater. It has the ability to precipitate phosphorus-containing substances, helping to remove them from wastewater.

Drinking water treatment: Slaked lime is used to create a mild alkaline solution, which improves the quality of drinking water by removing impurities and improving taste.

Heavy metal removal: Calcium hydroxide has the ability to precipitate heavy metal ions such as lead and cadmium, helping to remove them from water.

Anti-organic pollution: Used to precipitate and remove unwanted organic matter from water.

– Water supply and commercial water treatment: In municipal and commercial water supply systems, calcium hydroxide is commonly used for hardness control and pH adjustment.

5. How to prepare slaked lime.

Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) can be prepared by reacting calcium oxide (CaO) with water (H₂O). This produces calcium hydroxide and generates a certain amount of heat.

+ The main reaction formula is:

CaO+H2O→Ca (OH) 2

This process can take place under normal conditions, but is often done at elevated temperatures to speed up the process. Here is a detailed description of the process:

Step 1: Ingredients:

Calcium oxide (CaO), also known as quicklime or quartz.

Step 2: Process:

Calcium oxide (CaO) is mixed with water (H₂O).

The reaction between CaO and H₂O will produce calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂).

Step 3: Reaction formula:

CaO+H2O→Ca(OH)2

Step 4: Implementation conditions:

The process can occur at room temperature, but if it occurs at a higher temperature, the process will occur more rapidly.

Note:

This process is an exothermic reaction, meaning it produces heat as it takes place.

The final product is calcium hydroxide, a white or light gray solid that is popular in many applications such as water treatment, cement production, and many others.

6. First aid measures when lime sticks to the body.

  • For Skin:

Wash the wound with cold water for 15-20 minutes.

Do not use dyes or other substances.

  • For Eyes:

Using emulsion or clean water, rinse eyes for at least 15-20 minutes.

Continue rinsing the eye and seek medical attention if necessary.

  • For Respiration:

Move the victim away from the source of contamination.

If breathing is difficult, remove victim from source of contamination.

– Call an ambulance and take the victim to a doctor immediately.
