Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hoa - Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade reported that the city currently has about 638 chemical production and trading establishments, of which 401 are industrial chemicals, concentrated in districts 5, 10, 11, Tan Binh, Go Vap and Binh Tan.
In District 5 alone, the area around Kim Bien market including Go Cong, Van Tuong, Kim Bien, and Phan Van Khoe streets has over 70 establishments selling wholesale and retail industrial chemicals.
These facilities are both trading places and chemical storage facilities. The premises are small but contain many types of chemicals in large quantities, causing unsafe fire and explosion prevention, seriously affecting people's health, so it is necessary to build a chemical center.
According to Mr. Hoa, the center is expected to chemistry will be located next to Phong Phu Industrial Park, with a scale of about 11 hectares, and detailed planning will be completed by the end of 2016.
The Department of Industry and Trade expects that if the project is approved, the site clearance and construction of the center will be completed and put into operation by the end of 2017.
“Business locations must facilitate the business of small traders and enterprises operating in this industry while meeting state management needs, ensuring safety in storage and decanting in chemical business will be strictly controlled according to regulations issued by the People's Committee.
In addition, the city hopes that this place will not only be a shopping center but also a place to consult on solutions, introduce technology, and display new chemical products not only for the city but also for the whole country and the region," said Mr. Hoa.

Concluding the meeting, Mr. Tran Vinh Tuyen - Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee emphasized the need to soon establish a chemical and flavoring trading center in the city to end the interspersing of chemical warehouses in residential areas with potential fire and explosion risks, ensuring people's health.
“When there is a center chemical business, the City's flavor market will no longer have the function of trading chemicals, there will be no warehouses or chemical products.
“Stop selling all kinds of chemicals at this market, especially toxic chemicals. This is not only a story of fire and explosion but also the health of the city’s people,” Mr. Tuyen directed.
The Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee requested the Departments and branches to soon complete the project to build a chemical center following a multi-purpose business model serving both domestic and foreign markets, ensuring standards and reaching regional stature.
Not only trading chemicals, this location must also be planned as a warehouse to help businesses store chemicals to ensure safety requirements, ending the situation of chemical warehouses located in residential areas that the state cannot control.
In addition, the center also has the function of organizing exhibitions, consulting businesses, introducing new technologies and products in the chemical industry.
