Soap, also known as detergent, is a product used for washing, bathing, and cleaning, as a lubricant. Detergent is produced by reacting fats (vegetable or animal oils) with strong alkali (NAOH) by saponification reaction.

NAOH PROCESS IN DETERGENT (SOAP) PREPARATION
Soap is made from natural animal fats and vegetable oils. Animal fats and vegetable oils are esters of glycerol or propane-1,2,3 triol (glycerol), CH 2 OHCHOHCH 2 OH and long-chain carboxylic acids (commonly called fatty acids) RCO 2 H, where the alkane groups contain 7 to 21 carbon atoms.

Fats and oils are heated with an alkali, usually caustic soda – NaOH, and the esters are hydrolyzed to form the sodium salts of the carboxylic acids and the alcohol, glycerol propane-1,2,3 triol (glycerol):
This process is called saponification and the sodium salt of the acid is soap. Modern plants are continuous. The oil is refined, blended and then mixed with the NaOH solution very quickly. The mixture is fed into a heated reaction chamber where saponification occurs.
Glycerol is more valuable than soap and most of it is recovered. Some remains in the soap to make it softer and smoother. After saponification, the soap and glycerol mixture is usually passed into a rotating contact plate or RDC, where the mixture is passed through a column and washed with a NaCl solution flowing upstream. The soap is insoluble in salt water and separates out. The glycerol remains in the solution, known as lye. The washed soap is then treated with NaCl solutions and centrifuged to the desired soap concentration.
SEE MORE:
Their properties such as softening and smoothing depend on the length of the carboxylic acid chain, metal ions and the proportion of un-neutralized carboxylic acid. Soaps are also added with chemicals to give them their color and fragrance. Some soaps also contain antibacterial and exfoliating agents.
The soap is dried by spraying into a vacuum chamber to produce a final product suitable for forming into molds.
Additionally, glycerol solutions are concentrated by evaporation of water and the glycerol is then purified by distillation. Its main use is in the production of alkyd resins, which are used in paints. It is also used in the production of explosives (nitroglycerine) and in many cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.
