Industrial Use of Silicates – Detailed Process, Dosage and Safety

Use of silicates Correct application helps increase water treatment efficiency, optimize concrete waterproofing, stabilize ceramic-glass processes and improve cleaning efficiency. The article focuses on practical operations: mixing, dosing, construction, pH control, storage, transportation and common errors at factories/construction sites.

1) Use of silicate in water treatment

Goal when use of silicates In water treatment, it stabilizes pH, creates a protective film against corrosion and supports coagulation and sedimentation. Applicable to boiler systems, cooling water, and water supply pretreatment.

  1. Dilution: Mix 1:5 – 1:10 with clean water, stir well in a separate mixing tank to control the concentration.
  2. Dosing: Use metering pump; inject into the pipe/mixing tank at the vortex position for good mixing.
  3. pH control: Maintain 7.5–9.5 depending on technology. Monitor pH online or measure manually during operating shifts.
  4. Additional monitoring: Periodically check alkalinity, hardness, sediment to fine-tune dosage.

Note: Do not mix directly with acids or strong oxidizers. If used together, wait 30–60 minutes between refills and monitor pH continuously.

2) Use of silicate in construction (waterproofing, hardening)

In construction, use of silicates Helps reduce capillaries, increase surface hardness and limit water seepage for roofs, basements, and parking lots. Correct construction process helps the surface to be durable and stable for a long time.

  1. Surface preparation: Clean dust, grease, mold; surface must be relatively dry for good absorption.
  2. Solution preparation: Mix 1:1 to 1:3 with water depending on waterproofing or hardening goals. Stir well and filter impurities before application.
  3. Construction layer 1: Spray/brush evenly; avoid puddles. Allow to penetrate 20–40 minutes.
  4. Construction layer 2: Repeat to achieve desired protection. Check actual consumption.
  5. Maintenance: Avoid rain/water accumulation for 24 hours; acceptance after 48 hours.

Always test on a small area before mass deployment to optimize the rate and evaluate the impact on the next coating (if any).

3) Use of silicates in ceramics and glass

In the ceramic and glass industry, use of silicates to adjust glaze viscosity, stabilize shape during firing and increase mechanical strength.

  1. Prepare ingredients: Mix silicate with kaolin, quartz, feldspar according to technological formula.
  2. Fine grinding: Use ball mill to achieve required particle size, ensuring good dispersion.
  3. Make yeast: Adjust the silicate ratio to limit cracking of the glaze during drying and firing.
  4. Baking: Temperature range 1000–1300 °C depending on product line; heating and cooling rate control.

4) Using silicate for glue – adhesive

With glue for paper, wood, unburnt bricks or welding rods, use of silicates Helps increase adhesion and heat resistance.

  1. Bartending: Use pure or dilute to target viscosity; filter out impurities before use.
  2. Construction: Apply evenly; control the thickness of the adhesive layer to optimize drying time.
  3. Curing: Let dry naturally or with gentle heat depending on the material; test adhesion before packaging.

5) Use of silicates in detergents

In the formulation of laundry detergents and industrial cleaning agents, use of silicates to soften water, stabilize pH and increase cleaning efficiency.

  • Washing powder: Mix with LAS, soda, zeolite; control humidity and particle size to ensure good dissolution.
  • Liquid detergent: Add at the appropriate ratio to stabilize pH and limit equipment corrosion.

6) Common mistakes when using silicate (and how to fix them)

  • Wrong mixing ratio leads to precipitation/cloudy water: Check hardness and pH; dilute 1:5–1:10, add at point with vigorous stirring.
  • Add acid at the same time: 30–60 minutes before injection; monitor pH to avoid fluctuations.
  • Colored concrete membrane after construction: Due to puddles or dirt; need to clean thoroughly and spray thinly and evenly.
  • Slow drying glue: Reduce coating thickness, increase ventilation/light heating as recommended.

7) Safety, storage and transportation

Note: Always refer to the factory's internal MSDS/COA and SOP for dosage adjustments and specific procedures.

8) Quick checklist when implementing silicate use

  • Identify the target (water treatment, waterproofing, adhesive, cleaning).
  • Prepare the dosing pump/mixing tank and pH meter.
  • Mix at the recommended ratio and stir well before adding.
  • Fill at stirring point; monitor pH 7.5–9.5 (depending on process).
  • Record consumption, check for sediment/corrosion to fine-tune dosage.
  • Wear full PPE; keep tightly closed, away from CO₂ and direct sunlight.

FAQ on silicate use

Does silicate need to be diluted?

In most cases, a 1:5–1:10 dilution with clean water is required. Dilution helps control dosage, reduces precipitation, and increases mixing efficiency.

How to use silicate for concrete?

Mix 1:1–1:3, spray/brush 1–2 coats, avoid puddles; let dry for 24 hours and inspect after 48 hours.

How to preserve the product?

Close the lid tightly, store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and CO₂; use cans, IBC tanks, or specialized tank trucks when transporting.
