Tchemical properties

Ferric chloride solution – 38% ferric chloride alum is a chemical, with the formula FeCl3. The color of crystalline ferric chloride depends on the viewing angle: reflected light the crystals appear dark blue, but transmitted light has a reddish purple color. Anhydrous ferric chloride is a chemical that melts, forming a hydrated hydrogen chloride mist in moist air. It is rarely observed in its natural form, the mineral molysite, known mainly from some fumaroles

Application

In industrial applications, FeCl3 – ferric chloride 38% alum is used in wastewater treatment and drinking water production. In this application, FeCl3 in slightly basic water reacts with hydroxide ions to form a floc of iron(III) hydroxide, or more precisely FeO(OH), which can remove suspended matter.

[Fe (H 2 O) 6 ] 3 + + 4 HO – → [Fe (H 2 O) 2 (HO) 4 ] – + 4 H 2 O → [Fe (H 2 O) O (HO) 2 ] – + 6 H 2 O

It is also used as a leaching agent in chloride hydrometallurgy, for example in the production of Si from FeSi. (Silgrain process)

Another important application of iron(III) chloride is etching copper in the two-step redox reaction of copper(I) chloride and then copper(II) chloride in the production of printed circuit boards.

FeCl 3 + Cu → FeCl 2 + CuCl

FeCl 3 + CuCl → FeCl 2 + CuCl 2

Iron(III) chloride is used as a catalyst for the reaction of ethylene with chlorine, forming ethylene dichloride (1,2-dichloroethane), an important commodity chemical, used primarily for the industrial production of vinyl chloride monomer to make PVC.

H 2 C = CH 2 + Cl 2 → ClCH 2 CH 2 Cl

In the laboratory, 38% ferric alum is commonly used as a Lewis acid to catalyse reactions such as the chlorination of aromatic compounds and the Friedel-Crafts reaction of aromatics. It is less strong than aluminium chloride, but in some cases this sweetness leads to higher yields, for example in the alkylation of benzene:

The ferric chloride test is a traditional colorimetric test for phenol, which uses a 1% alum ferric chloride 38% solution that has been neutralized with sodium hydroxide until a slight precipitate of FeO(OH) is formed. The mixture is filtered before use. The organic matter is dissolved in water, methanol, or ethanol, then the neutralized 38% alum ferric chloride solution is added, giving a temporary or permanent color (usually purple, green, or blue) indicating the presence of phenol or enol.

This reaction is exploited in the Trinder spot test, which is used to indicate the presence of salicylates, particularly salicylic acid, which has a phenolic OH group.

Other applications

Used in anhydrous form as a drying reagent in certain reactions.

Used in water and wastewater treatment to precipitate phosphate as iron(III) phosphate.

Used by American coin collectors to determine the date, month, and year of Buffalo nickels that are worn away the date is no longer visible.

Used by knife and swordsmiths to stain blades, to give a contrasting effect to the metal, and to show metal layers or imperfections.

Used to model widmanstatten etch iron meteorites.

Essential for engraving of photogravure printing plates and fine art prints in gravure and for engraving cylindrical gravure printing used in the printing industry.

Used to make printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Used in veterinary practice to treat overcropping of animal claws, especially when overcropping results in bleeding.

Reaction with cyclopentadienylmagnesium bromide in a preparation of ferrocene, a metal sandwich complex.

Sometimes used in a technique of Raku ware firing, iron colors a piece of pottery pink, brown, and orange.

Used for pitting and crevice corrosion testing of stainless steel and other alloys.

Used in combination with Nai in acetonitrile to mitigate primary amine organic azides

Used in an animal model of thrombosis
