Chemical properties
NaOH – Sodium hydroxide is a strong base: turns litmus blue, phenolphthalein solution pink.
Reacts with acids to form salt and water: NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H2O
Reaction with acidic oxides: SO2, CO2…
2NaOH + SO2 → Na2SO3 + H2O
NaOH + SO2 → NaHSO3
Reacts with organic acids to form its salts and hydrolyzes esters and peptides:
Ester hydrolysis reaction
React with salt to form new base and new salt (condition: after reaction, precipitate or vapor must be formed):
2NaOH + CuCl2 → 2NaCl + Cu(OH)2↓
Reaction of some amphoteric metals (Al, Zn...): 2NaOH + 2Al + 2H2O → 2NaAlO2 + 3H2↑ 2NaOH + Zn → Na2ZnO2 + H2↑
Reaction with amphoteric compounds: NaOH + Al(OH)3 → NaAlO2 + 2H2O 2NaOH +
