Product Description:
Table salt, or simply salt in common usage (although not all salt is table salt in scientific terms), is a mineral used by humans as a seasoning for food. There are many forms of table salt: coarse salt, refined salt, iodized salt. It is a crystalline solid, white to a very light pink or gray color, obtained from seawater or salt mines. Salt obtained from seawater has smaller or larger crystals than rock salt. In nature, table salt consists mainly of sodium chloride (NaCl), but also contains a few other minerals (trace minerals). Table salt obtained from rock salt may be grayer because of traces of trace minerals. Table salt is essential for the life of all living organisms, including humans. Table salt participates in regulating the body's water content (fluid balance). The taste of salt is one of the basic tastes. Salt cravings can arise from trace mineral deficiencies as well as from sodium chloride deficiency.
Salt is essential for life, but excessive use can increase the risk of health problems, such as high blood pressure. In cooking, salt is used as a preservative as well as a seasoning.
Coarse salt
Some people think that coarse salt is healthier or more natural. However, coarse salt may not contain enough iodine to prevent some iodine deficiency diseases such as goiter.
Refined salt
Table salt, which is widely used today, mainly contains sodium chloride (NaCl). However, only about 7% of table salt is used in daily life as a food additive. Most table salt is used for industrial purposes, from pulp and paper production to dyeing in textiles or in the production of soaps and detergents, and it has a large commercial value.
The production and use of salt is one of the oldest chemical industries. Salt is obtained by evaporating seawater in salt pans under sunlight. The salt obtained from seawater is sometimes called sea salt. In countries where salt mines exist, the extraction of salt from these mines may be cheaper. Salt mines are probably formed by evaporation of ancient brine lakes. These mines may be mined in the usual way or by pumping water into the salt mines to obtain salt-saturated brine.
After obtaining crude salt, people will carry out refining technology to improve the purity as well as the properties for easy transportation and storage. Salt refining is mainly recrystallization of salt. In this process, people will precipitate impurities (mainly magnesium and calcium compounds). The multi-step evaporation process will then be used to obtain pure sodium chloride and it will be dried.
