1. Properties:

– Molecular formula: CH2Cl2
– Molecular mass: 84.93 g/mol
– Appearance: Colorless liquid
– Density: 1.33 g/cm3
2. Preparation
MC is produced by reacting Methane or Methyl Chloride with Chlorine gas at 400-500oC. At this temperature both Methane and Methyl Chloride react and produce the following chlorinated compounds:
CH 4 + Cl 2 -> CH 3Cl + HCl
CH3 + Cl2 -> CH2Cl2 + HCl
CH2 + Cl2 -> CHCl3 + HCl
CH3 + Cl2 -> CCl4 + HCl
The products of this process include Methyl Chloride, Dichloromethane, Chloroform, and Carbon tetrachloride. These compounds are then separated by distillation.
3. Application
Due to its volatility and solubility in many organic solvents, MC is used in many fields.
– Used as paint remover and degreaser.
– In the food industry, MC is used to extract caffeine from coffee and tea.
– Due to its volatile properties, MC is used in spray paints and PU foam blowing agents.
– Due to its low boiling point, MC also functions as a “heat engine”, meaning it can create movement at room temperature. A typical example is the Beer Bird toy. This toy operates at room temperature under the influence of MC vapor.
– Used in plastic welding for example it is used to weld the outer casings of electrical measuring devices.
– Used in the printing industry on garments
– Used in mosquito sprays
– Used as a cleaning agent in leather shoe factories
– Used in foam production
- Used in the production of instant glue
