TOXICITY OF NAOH CHEMICALS

NAOH chemicals come into contact with our bodies through the skin, eyes, nose, and mouth.

Depending on the level and duration of exposure, chemicals can cause hazards such as:

  • + Causes mutations in breast cells -> can cause breast cancer
  • + Damage to organs: mucous membranes, respiratory system, skin, eyes

  • – Corrosive, irritating (burns), and permeable to skin.
  • Symptoms: itching, scaling, redness, burning.

Eye contact

  • – Damage the lens or cause blindness.
  • – Symptoms: red eyes, watery eyes and itching.

Nasal contact (inhalation of toxic gases)

  • – Affects the respiratory system
  • Symptoms: burning of the lungs, sneezing, coughing.
  • – Inhaling too much can damage the lungs, causing suffocation, fainting or even death.

Nasal contact (swallowing, drinking)

  • – Harmful to the intestines
  • – Symptoms: similar to when inhaling NaOH dust

FIRST AID PREVENTION

  • + Remove all clothes and shoes.
  • + Rinse with clean water for at least 15 minutes, can use cold water.
  • + Cover the burned skin with a soft bandage.
  • + In severe cases, wash with soap and apply antibacterial cream.
  • + Call an ambulance or go to a medical facility immediately.
  • + Clothes and shoes must be washed thoroughly before reuse.

 

Eye

  • + Check and remove contact lenses (if any).
  • + Immediately flush with clean water continuously for at least 15 minutes. Cold water can be used.
  • + Call an ambulance or quickly go to a medical facility.

Inhale wrongly

  • + Quickly move to a safe, ventilated place.
  • + Loosen or remove clothing.
  • + Artificial respiration (mouth-to-mouth) if breathing stops. Note: may cause poisoning to the rescuer when performed.
  • + Give oxygen if breathing is difficult.
  • + Quickly go to hospital.

  • + Never force the victim to vomit, unless you are a medical professional.
  • + Do not put anything in the victim's mouth.
  • + Loosen clothing.
  • + Emergency medical transfer.
