    • NaOH (Sodium hydroxide, or Caustic Soda) is a 50% saturated solution. In pure solid form, it is white in the form of pellets or flakes.
    • NaOH easily absorbs CO2 in the air so it is often stored in a tightly closed container. NaOH reacts violently with water and releases a large amount of heat, soluble in ethanol and methanol

  • Reacts with acids and acid oxides to form salt and water:
    • NaOH(dd) + HCl(dd) → NaCl(dd) + H2O
  • Reaction with carbon dioxide:
    • 2 NaOH + CO2 → Na2CO3 + H2O
  • React with strong metals to form new bases and new metals:
    • NaOH + K → KOH + Na
  • React with salt to form new base and new salt:
    • 2 NaOH + CuCl2 → 2NaCl + Cu(OH)2

Physical properties

The dissolution enthalpy ΔHo is -44,5kJ/mol. In solution it forms the monohydrate at 12,3-61,8°C with a melting point of 65,1°C and a density in solution of 1,829 g/cm3.

APPLICATIONS

In paper production: NaOH is used as a chemical to treat wood, bamboo, rattan, etc. to make raw materials for paper production based on the Sulphate and Soda method.

In addition to its application in paper production, NaOH is also an important chemical used in many other industrial fields such as: Food processing, wastewater treatment, pH adjustment and resin regeneration in the ion exchange process, neutralization and descaling in water supply pipes, applications in soap production, dyeing, cleaning, etc.
