Methanol (CH3OH) – Overview of CH3OH, properties, applications & safety
Methanol (CH3OH) is an important basic chemical of modern industry. Produced mainly from synthesis gas (CO/CO2/H2) with metal catalyst, CH3OH is the raw material for formaldehyde, acetic acid, MTBE, DME; and is also a multipurpose solvent - fuel.
1. Quick facts about Methanol CH3OH
| Name | Methanol; Methyl alcohol; Wooden wine |
|---|---|
| Formula | CH3OH (CH3OH) |
| CAS | 67-56-1 |
| UN number | UN1230 Flammable |
| Common Purities | ≥ 99.85% (AA grade) |
| Specific gravity (20°C) | ~0.79 g/cm³ |
|---|---|
| Boiling point | ~64.7°C |
| Flash point | ~11°C (Closed cup) |
| Dissolve | Completely miscible with water & many organic solvents |
| Odor | Slightly sweet, similar to ethanol |
2. Production process & technology base
Modernly, Methanol is synthesized from syngas (CO/CO2/H2) under medium to high pressure and temperature, Cu/ZnO/Al catalyst2O3Syngas sources come from natural gas reforming, coal/biomass gasification or methane/CO reforming2. The “greening” trend includes: MTO/MTP value chain and e-Methanol (green CH3OH) from H2 green + CO2 confiscation
3. Typical industrial applications
- Petrochemical raw materials: Formaldehyde, acetic acid, MTBE; MTO/MTP chain produces olefins (ethylene, propylene).
- Fuel – energy: Blending with gasoline; converting to DME (LPG/diesel replacement); fuel for fuel cells & small furnaces.
- Solvents – additives: Paint, printing ink, detergent, glass cleaner; textile, dyeing and printing industry.
- biodiesel: Esterification/transesterification agent for vegetable oils/fats.
- Wastewater treatment: Add carbon with CH3OH for denitrification microorganisms in the denitrification tank to reduce NO3-.
4. Toxicity & Safety (EHS)
Warning: CH3OH is very toxic. When entering the body, it is converted into formaldehyde and formic acid, causing damage to the optic nerve and central nervous system.
- Dangerous dose: ~10 ml can cause blindness; ≥30 ml can cause death (depending on physical condition & medical intervention).
- Contact: Inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact are hazardous.
- Protection: Chemical-resistant gloves, goggles/face-shield, boots, fire-resistant clothing; forced ventilation; flammable gas concentration measuring device.
- Fire and explosion: CH3OH vapor forms explosive mixture with air; grounding required - anti-static, prohibit nearby sources of fire/welding/cutting.
5. Storage – packaging – transportation
- Pack: Steel drums 160–200 L, IBC 1000 L, separate tanks.
- Preservation: Cool, well-ventilated area, away from heat – sparks – flames; with overflow chute (bund), leak sensor, suitable fire extinguisher (foam, CO₂, dry powder).
- Transport: Labeled UN 1230 – class 3 (Flammable liquid); dedicated vehicle, grounded – antistatic.
- Expiry date: 24–36 months (original packaging, standard conditions).
6. Reference specifications (CH3OH ≥ 99.85%)

| Country | ≤ 0.10% (Karl Fischer) |
| Acidity (as acetic acid) | ≤ 0.003% (w/w) |
| Alkalinity (as NH₃) | ≤ 0.0005% (w/w) |
| Chloride (Cl⁻) | ≤ 2 mg/kg |
| Sulfate (SO₄²⁻) | ≤ 2 mg/kg |
| Color (Pt-Co) | ≤ 10 APHA |
Note: Standards may vary by manufacturer/batch; please request latest COA when ordering.
7. Technical suggestions for the technical department
- Wastewater treatment: Calculate CH3OH dosage according to C/N/P ratio for denitrification (refer to COD:NO₃-N ratio ≈ 3–4:1), control DO & ORP, avoid excess carbon causing odor.
- biodiesel: Control of molar ratio of oil:CH3OH (usually 1:6), catalyst (NaOH/KOH), temperature 55–60°C; recovery of CH3OH from glycerin by distillation.
- Warehouse fire safety: Hazardous zoning, foam/CO₂ system, spill tray, VOC sensor, Hot Work procedure, periodic incident response training.
8. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can CH3OH be used instead of Ethanol for cleaning?
Not recommended due to high toxicity, risk of inhalation and skin absorption. For human contact hygiene purposes, use standard ethanol/isopropanol.
Can CH3OH be mixed directly into gasoline?
Mixing must comply with technical standards (materials, fuel system, ratio, anti-corrosion additives - phase separation). Do not mix without certification.
Does CH3OH have an "expiration date"?
Yes, depending on tightness – humidity – contamination. Proper storage will maintain quality for 24–36 months; water content should be rechecked before use for moisture sensitive processes.
