Uses:
In its anhydrous form ferric chloride is used as a drying reagent in certain reactions.
Used in water and wastewater treatment to precipitate phosphate such as iron (III) phosphate.
As a pesticide additive.
Used by knife and swordsmiths to stain blades, to give a contrasting effect to the metal, and to show metal layers or imperfections.
Used to model widmanstatten etch iron meteorites.
fecl3 is used for gravure cylindrical engraving used in the printing industry.
Used to make printed circuit boards (PCBs).
Used in veterinary practice to treat overcropping of animal claws, especially when overcropping results in bleeding.
Reaction with cyclopentadienylmagnesium bromide in a preparation of ferrocene, a metal sandwich complex.
Sometimes used in a technique of Raku ware firing, iron colors a piece of pottery pink, brown, and orange.
Used for pitting and crevice corrosion testing of stainless steel and other alloys.
Used in combination with Nai in acetonitrile to mitigate primary amine organic azides
Used in an animal model of thrombosis
Color
In liquid form, fecl3 is brown, has a characteristic odor, is easily soluble in water, and when dissolved in water, it will form an exothermic reaction, is viscous, acidic and corrosive. The color of Iron 3 chloride is a crystal that depends on the viewing angle: By reflected light the crystals appear dark blue, but by transmitted light they appear purple-red.

Chemical reaction
In the laboratory FeCl3 is often used as a Lewis acid to catalyse reactions such as the chlorination of aromatic compounds and the Friedel-Crafts reaction of aromatics. It is less strong than aluminium chloride, but in some cases this sweetness leads to higher yields, for example in the alkylation of benzene:
Fecl3 chemical is a catalyst
The ferric chloride test is a traditional colorimetric test for phenol, which uses a 1% iron(III) chloride solution that has been neutralized with sodium hydroxide until a slight precipitate of FeO(OH) is formed.[16] The mixture is filtered before use. The organic matter is dissolved in water, methanol, or ethanol, then the neutralized FeCl3 solution is added, giving a temporary or permanent color (usually purple, green, or blue) indicating the presence of phenol or enol.
This reaction is exploited in the Trinder spot test, which is used to indicate the presence of salicylates, particularly salicylic acid, which has a phenolic OH group.
