How to treat some chemical burns

1) Treatment of chemical burns caused by carbolic acid or Phenol

Stop the spread of chemical burns with a stream of water, the chemical does not mix with water.

Rinse with alcohol to remove any traces of acid.

Rinse off chemicals with water.

2) Treatment of chemical burns caused by sulfuric acid or HF

If the burn is not serious, treat sulfuric acid burns by washing with soapy water.

Treat burns caused by hydrofluoric acid with a solution containing bicarbonate, such as soda. Make a rinsing solution with soda and a little clean water. After rinsing, clean with water.

3) Dry chemical powder burn treatment

Remove any dry chemical powders (such as lime) from the burn area. Some dry chemical powders combine with water to form a flammable liquid.

Rinse with running water for at least 20 minutes. Do this only after all dried chemical powder has been removed.

Note when handling some chemicals that cause burns:

Contact poison control immediately if a chemical can burn the throat or an internal organ has been swallowed. Bring the chemical with you to the location where you are being called so the operator can be informed of what has been swallowed.

Never rinse eyes directly with carbolic acid mixed with alcohol. Use large amounts of water to flush out the chemicals.

Do not rinse eyes with bicarbonate of soda solution.
