Measures to prevent toxic chemicals

Too many chemicals in the environment can cause permanent damage to your health. However, you should not give up cleaning products completely.
Check out some of these tips to keep your home clean and free of pollutants.

1. Clean the air
Ventilation is key. Ventilate the room during and after cleaning, especially if you are doing heavy, time-consuming tasks like scrubbing bathroom walls or if you have a respiratory condition. Turn on the bathroom fan and open a window if you have one. Smaller rooms are more stuffy than larger ones because there is less air to dilute the toxic chemicals.

2. Avoid chemical abuse
Clean with the smallest amount of cleaning agent possible.

3. Rinse off chemicals
Rinse surfaces thoroughly with water after using chemicals.

4. Read the instructions carefully
Many labels warn of the dangers and provide instructions for safer use. Never mix cleaning products together – especially chlorine bleach with products containing ammonia, which can create toxic fumes. Replace product caps immediately after use.

5. Protective equipment
Some sprays and aerosols release inhalable particles into the air, so consider wearing a disposable mask when cleaning your entire home. Avoid highly scented products, as they often contain terpenes (pine oil, lemon, etc.).

6. Using natural materials
Keep in mind that soap and water, vinegar or baking soda combined with a few other common cleaning agents can get every nook and cranny polished instead of a dozen different cleaning chemicals.
