  • WHAT IS HCL ACID, APPLICATIONS OF INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS HCL

Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) is a chemical with many outstanding properties, playing an important role in industry and life. Known as a strong acid with high corrosive ability, HCl is commonly used in water treatment, steel production, food processing and pharmaceuticals. So what is it? What is HCl? and why has it become one of the indispensable chemicals in industrial production? Let's learn about the characteristics, properties and practical applications of HCl acid to better understand its essential role.

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF HCL ACID

Physical properties

Hydrochloric acid is a gas, colorless, corrosive odor, highly soluble in water to form a strong acid solution HCl; heavier than air. In liquid form, hydrochloric acid is colorless and volatile. Hydrochloric acid At its most concentrated form, this acid can form acid mists that are corrosive to human tissues, causing damage to the respiratory system, eyes, skin, and intestines.

Chemical properties:

Hydrochloric acid is a strong acid that exhibits all the properties of an acid.

  • + Turns litmus paper red, reacts with base → salt + H2O.
  • + Reaction with metal oxides → salt (in which the metal retains its valence) + H2O.
    • CuO + 2HCl → CuCl2 + H2O
  • + Reaction with metal → salt + H2.
    • Fe + 2HCl → FeCl2 + H2
  • + Reaction with salt → new salt + new acid
    • Na2CO3 + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H2O + CO2
  • + HCl acid shows oxidizing properties when reacting with metals before H2 (see acidity section).
  • + HCl acid acts as a reducing agent when reacting with strong oxidizing agents such as KMnO4, K2Cr2O7, MnO2, KClO3, ...
    • 2KMn+7O4 + 16H+1Cl → 2KCl + 2Mn+2Cl2 + 5Cl20 + 6H2O

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS OF HCL 32%

HCL 32% is used in many industries such as:

  • Steel rust removal: Used to remove rust on steel before it is used for other purposes such as rolling, electroplating, etc. Technical HCl with a concentration of 18% is used as a rust remover for carbon steel.
  • Production of organic compounds: HCL 32% is used in the production of organic compounds such as: vinyl chloride and dichloroethane to produce PVC, bisphenol A to produce polycarbonate, activated carbon and ascorbic acid and some other pharmaceutical products.
  • Production of inorganic compounds:Some products can be produced from HCL by acid-base reaction to produce inorganic compounds such as:
    • Water treatment chemicals such as iron (III) chloride and polyaluminium chloride (PAC). These are used as coagulants and flocculants to settle components in wastewater treatment, as well as in drinking water production and paper production.
    • Inorganic compounds produced using HCl include calcium chloride, nickel chloride for electroplating, and zinc chloride for the plating industry and battery production.
  • pH control and neutralization: HCL is also used to adjust the basicity of a solution.
    • In the food, pharmaceutical and drinking water industries requiring high purity, high quality HCL is used to adjust the pH of the water to be treated.
    • In industries that do not require high purity, industrial grade HCL is sufficient for wastewater neutralization and swimming pool water treatment.
  • Regeneration by ion exchange: High quality HCl is used to regenerate ion exchange resins. Ion exchange and demineralized water is used in all drinking water industries and some food industries.

Hydrochloric acid is not only a basic chemical in industry but also an essential element in modern production and processing processes. However, with its strong properties and high corrosiveness, the use of HCl must strictly comply with safety regulations to ensure effectiveness and health protection.

Understanding Chemicals: Benefits and Safe Use

Chemicals are often understood as industrial products and are often associated with the stereotype of being dangerous and toxic. However, chemicals are actually an indispensable part of modern life. Understanding chemicals correctly helps us to effectively take advantage of the benefits they bring, while minimizing potential risks.

What Are Chemicals?

Chemicals are not just industrial products, but everything around us – from water, air, salt, pepper, to vitamins, medicines – are chemicals. Whether they are natural or synthetic, they are subject to strict regulations on chemical control to ensure safety for health and the environment.

Are Chemicals Safe?

Nothing is absolutely safe, and chemicals are no exception. The “safety” or “danger” of a chemical depends on how it is used. Risks only arise when we use it incorrectly or exceed the allowable concentration. For example, gasoline is very flammable and explosive if exposed to heat, but is safe when used properly at gas stations.

Chemical Hazard Control

  • Risk classification: Some high-risk chemicals are banned or are only allowed to be used at very low concentrations. These chemical lists are strictly managed in each country, including Vietnam.
  • Control from manufacturer: Large corporations have teams of experts and research facilities to ensure that chemical products are safe for consumers and do not harm the environment.

Risks and Benefits

Chemicals bring many obvious benefits to life:

  • Production and life: Chemicals are involved in the production of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, detergents, plastics, and many other useful products.
  • Improve quality of life: Products such as fabric softeners, perfumes, or detergents make life more convenient.
  • Scientific applications:Research and inventions from modern chemical technology increasingly bring safer and more effective products.

Choosing Safe Chemical Products

  • Prioritize reputable brands: Choose products from large manufacturers with research and quality control teams.
  • Verified origin: Products should have information on origin, quality registration and comply with legal regulations.
  • Use properly: Read the instructions for use and storage carefully to ensure maximum safety.

Know to Take Advantage

Consumers need to understand chemicals to take advantage of the benefits they bring, and at the same time avoid being affected by inaccurate information. Chemicals, when used properly, not only bring convenience but also contribute to improving the quality of life, protecting health and the environment.
