Acetone – C3H6O2

Acetone is a clear, colorless, rapidly evaporating liquid with a pungent sweet odor. It boils at low temperatures and has a high evaporation rate and solubility.
Acetone is soluble in water, hydrocarbon solvents, and most organic solvents. It also dissolves well in animal and vegetable fats.
Application:
a. Paint and resin production
Acetone is a good solvent for nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, cellulose ether, used to reduce the viscosity of paints containing these substances. It is especially suitable for the production of quick-drying paints.
b. Pharmaceuticals and cosmetics
Acetone is used as a reducing agent in medicines and in the cosmetics, paint and nail polish remover industries.
c. Compressed Acetylene
Acetylene is an important industrial gas but cannot be compressed sufficiently to be stored in cylindrical cylinders without risk of explosion. Acetone can dissolve large amounts of Acetylene gas.
d. Other applications
Acetone is used in the following applications:
Cleaning and dehydrating solvent for electronic components
Co-solvent for neoprene, for acrylic and nitrocellulose cements
Quick-drying ink
Solvent in dry cleaning
